Wheel Balancing

Wheel balancing is the process of correcting uneven weight distribution in a wheel and tyre assembly so that it rotates evenly at high speeds. A properly balanced wheel not only eliminates vibrations but also improves ride comfort, handling, and tyre longevity.

When wheels are manufactured, there may be minor variations in weight due to imperfections in materials or production. Over time, tyres can also lose balance because of uneven tread wear, pothole damage, or rim issues. An unbalanced wheel often causes noticeable vibrations, usually felt through the steering wheel or across the entire vehicle, especially at highway speeds. Left uncorrected, this can lead to faster tyre wear, strain on the suspension, and even steering problems.

During the balancing process, a technician places the wheel and tyre assembly on a specialised balancing machine that detects weight irregularities. To restore balance, small metal weights are attached to the rim with adhesive. These adjustments ensure the wheel rotates evenly, reducing vibration and preventing unnecessary wear on the vehicle.

Because wheel balancing directly impacts safety, comfort, and performance, it is recommended as part of regular vehicle maintenance. It should be done whenever new tyres are installed, after hitting a pothole or curb, or whenever vibrations are noticed while driving. Keeping wheels balanced not only extends tyre life but also provides a smoother, safer driving experience.
